A tonic is something, sometimes a medicine, that makes you feel better or restores you to health.
A hot tonic to me is a supercharged hot drink with lots of layers of goodness. They were very trendy in America while I was doing my culinary training, I used to play around and make so many cool variations. Let me break down the how to's and you can get creative and make your own!
Choose your ingredients and pop them in a blender:
1. 250-300ml of m*lk or Tea as a base
- Your favourite warm milk
- Straight hot water with 2-3 tsp m*lk paste
- Tea base (could be herbs that need brewing in hot water - pau d'arco, cats claw etc)
2. Fat, 1-2tsp of:
- Ghee
- Butter
- MCT oil
- Coconut oil
- Coconut Milk powder
3. Protein (optional), 1 tbsp of:
- Collagen
- Marine Collagen
- Whey Powder
4. Tonic Herbs, Mushrooms and Powders 1/4 - 1 tsp of:
- Reishi
- Tremella
- Chaga
- Astragalus
- Lion's Mane
- Deer Antler
- Bee Pollen
- Maca
- Mesquite
- Lucuma
- Mucuna
5. Your choice of Flavour:
- 1 shot of Coffee
- 1-2 tsp Chai powder
- 1 tbsp crum.
- 2-4 tsp ritual
- 1 tsp Rose powder
- 1/4 tsp vanilla powder or 1/2 tsp vanilla extract
- 1/2 tsp Turmeric Powder
- 2-4 tsp Carob Powder
- 1 tsp Matcha Powder
6. Sweetener 1-2 tsp of:
- Honey
- Maple
- Coconut sugar
- Jaggery
Pop the lid on the blender - cover with a tea towel as you are blending hot liquid, sometimes the steam can pop the lid off of the blender (trust me - it's messy!) Blend for a minute. Pour into your favourite mug and enjoy!
The tonic combos really are endless 💫
